1 Describe a song that you like.
You should say:
What song it is
What genre it is
Where you first heard it
And explain why you like it
Answer.
There's this fantastic song called "Holocene" by Bon Iver. It falls under the genre of indie folk, with this beautiful, melancholic melody and poetic lyrics. The first time I heard it actually wasn't that long ago – it was playing in a small coffee shop I wandered into while traveling last year.
The song really resonates with me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the lyrics paint such a vivid picture of change and the passage of time. Lines like "everything all in its own time" really make you think about how life unfolds in its own way, and sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Secondly, the melody itself is so emotionally charged – it starts out quite gentle and builds to this powerful crescendo, which always gives me goosebumps. It's a song that makes you stop and feel things, you know?
I think "Holocene" is a perfect example of how music can be so evocative and capture complex emotions. It's a song I always come back to when I'm feeling introspective or need a moment to reflect.

What the song is about
and explain why it is interesting.
Answer.
There's a delightful song called "Dandelion" by a singer-songwriter named Ruth B. I first came across it a few years ago, browsing through some music recommendations on Youtube. The song itself is a sweet and simple ode to young love, with lyrics about wishing on dandelions for someone special to return your feelings.
What makes "Dandelion" interesting for me is twofold. Firstly, it captures the innocence and excitement of a first crush perfectly. The song uses this imagery of blowing on dandelion seeds and making wishes, which is something many people can relate to from their childhood. It really brings you back to that carefree time when emotions are raw and new. Secondly, the melody itself is quite catchy and upbeat, despite the slightly melancholic lyrics about longing. It's a song that gets stuck in your head easily, but in a good way! It's a great reminder that even when love feels a little uncertain, it can still be a joyful experience.
Overall, "Dandelion" is a charming song that tugs at your heartstrings with its relatable theme and simple yet effective delivery. It's a perfect pick-me-up on a gloomy day.

1 What kind of music is popular in your country now and what kind will be in the future?
Answer: In Vietnam right now, V-pop, which is Vietnamese pop music, absolutely dominates the airwaves. It's heavily influenced by K-pop and J-pop, with catchy melodies, slick production, and a focus on youthful energy. However, I foresee a future where Vietnamese music becomes more diverse. There's a growing underground scene with independent artists experimenting with electronic music, rock, and even traditional folk styles with a modern twist. This exposure to different genres, along with the ease of accessing global music online, is bound to broaden Vietnamese musical tastes.
Vocabulary.
dominate (v): thống trị
slick (adj): bóng bẩy
foresee (v): dự đoán
underground scene (n): cộng đồng âm nhạc độc lập
genres (n): các thể loại nhạc
bound to (idiom): chắc chắn sẽ

Vocabulary.
gravitate towards (v): hướng đến
Cải lương (n): cải lương

3 What do you think influences a young person’s taste in music?
Answer: There are definitely a number of factors that shape a young person's musical preferences. Peer influence plays a big role – friends often introduce each other to new music, and it can be fun to bond over shared interests. On top of that, social media and online streaming platforms like Youtube constantly expose young people to a vast array of musical styles, allowing them to discover artists and genres they might not have otherwise encountered.

bond over (v): gắn kết qua
expose (v): tiếp xúc
vast (adj): rộng lớn

Answer: While I love hip hop, I probably wouldn't blast it around my grandfather. He grew up in a different era with very different musical tastes. It wouldn't be his cup of tea, and I wouldn't want to impose my preferences on him. There's a time and place for everything, and I'd much rather listen to traditional music with him and learn about its history and significance.
Vocabulary.
era (n): thời đại
cup of tea (idiom): không thích hợp
impose (v): áp đặt
time and place (idiom): thời gian và địa điểm thích hợp
significance (n): tầm quan trọng
5 Why do you think people of different age groups have different favourite songs?
Answer: There are two key reasons why musical preferences tend to solidify around our teenage years. Firstly, music becomes deeply entwined with our developmental stages. Certain songs act as a soundtrack to pivotal moments in our lives – first loves, friendships formed, or even rebellious phases. These emotional associations create a sense of nostalgia, making us hold onto those songs for dear life. Secondly, there's a social element at play. We often bond with friends over shared musical tastes, and these connections can become a cherished part of our identity. As we get older, we're less likely to actively seek out new music, and our established favourites become a comfort blanket of familiar memories.
Vocabulary.
solidify (v): củng cố
entwined with (phrasal verb): gắn liền với
developmental stages (n): giai đoạn phát triển
pivotal moments (n): những khoảnh khắc quan trọng
associations (n): sự liên kết

Answer: That's a subjective question – what one person considers a masterpiece, another might find unbearable! There's incredible music being created across all genres right now, but it's all about personal preference. Music is a constantly evolving art form, and what defines "good" can change over time. The beauty lies in the vast array of styles available, allowing everyone to find something that resonates with them.

The raw energy of a band performing in the moment, the shared experience with a crowd – it can create an atmosphere that a recording simply can't replicate. That being said, sometimes you just want to curl up at home and get lost in an album. The beauty of music is its versatility – it can be a social experience or a deeply personal one, depending on the setting and your mood.

On the other hand, CDs (or streaming services these days) allow you to focus on the music itself without distractions. You can also control the volume and revisit your favourite parts easily. Ultimately, both formats have their merits, and the best choice comes down to personal preference and the specific artist or album.
Vocabulary.
one-size-fits-all (adj): phù hợp với tất cả mọi người
energy (n): năng lượng
distractions (n): sự sao nhãng
volume (n): âm lượng

However, I also enjoy a lot of contemporary music genres like electronic and indie rock that they wouldn't necessarily identify with. I think it's natural for musical preferences to evolve over time, and that's part of the beauty of having such a vast musical landscape to explore.
