2. Work or Job

Speaking IELTS Topic Work or Job
Câu hỏi về chủ đề Work or Job IELTS Speaking Part 1

What type of work/job do you do?

I'm currently employed as a content writer, a common occupation in Vietnam, at a small private English school. My primary responsibility is to gather academic resources for the center's English language learners.

Why did you choose to do that type of job?

Despite the fact that I don't get paid very well for this position, I feel good knowing that I'm helping the community. I particularly enjoy occupations in education and training, and my work is one of them. My drive to work harder stems from seeing how the students there are doing.

00:00

3. Study

What subject(s) are you studying?

I recently received my engineering degree, and right now I'm enrolled in a short-term software development course.

Why did you choose to study that subject?

The field of software development is fascinating. I chose it because there are numerous options to advance my profession in animation through it.

00:00

4. Home

What kind of accommodation do you live in?

In a lovely loft apartment, I reside. It has broad windows and high ceilings. I use it for both my daily life and my job. Additionally, it has some nice features like firepits, patios, and club rooms.

What is your favourite room in your home?

My bedroom is my favorite space. I spend most of my time there, therefore the reason. And I've done my best to adorn it.

00:00

5. Hometown

What is the name of your hometown?

I live in Khanh Hoa, a South Central Coastal province of Vietnam. It is well known for the attractive beauty of its own capital – Nha Trang. It has everything from mountains to spacious houses and a diverse community.

Can you describe your hometown a little?

The magnificent scenery with rolling mountains and lakes with a green tint are breathtaking to behold. However, my hometown is now quite promising as a result of the growing economy, with many enterprises.

00:00

6. New Year

How do you celebrate New year?

My place has unique New Year's celebrations. I often begin my day with prayers with my family. Then we proceed to my aunt's home where we enjoy a wonderful family brunch. We enjoy playing chess and video games together, and the evening ends with fireworks.

Do you still remember a New year that you celebrated?

Our holiday celebrations were negatively impacted by COVID-19 last year. But I'm delighted that social media gave us a sense of unity and gave our year full of love and optimism a head start.

00:00

7. Feeling Happy

Is there anything that made you feel happy lately?

Coming home and talking to my Mom typically makes me pleased after a busy day at work. We are like best friends, and I tell her everything.

What do you do to stay happy?

I think that being happy is just a different mental state. I like to watch comedies to keep me happy.

00:00

8. Hobby

What do you like to do in your free time?

When I have time, I enjoy reading a lot. My favorite books are self-help ones because they provide just the proper amount of inspiration to keep me going.

How often do you do this hobby or activity?

Actually, I perform this activity every day. I always have at least one or two books with me, and I read whenever I have nothing else to do.

00:00

9. Voice

Has your voice ever changed?

Yes, the metamorphosis began when I reached adolescence, most likely as a result of hormonal changes.

Is your voice similar to your parents?

That's not at all! Our voices are so recognizable that they can be heard from great distances.

00:00

10. Language

Do you think some language is difficult to learn?

Honestly speaking, I think it might come down to several reasons. First off, you have to get tons of things done. I mean you have to learn vocabulary, you have to get a lot of language input in, you have to learn the grammar of that language. All of these can be very frustrating. Plus, the acquisition of language takes a very long time, so you’re likely to lose motivation during the process.

Would you like to learn other languages?

Learning a language is a wonderful adventure. This is because I’m really interested in exploring other cultures, and I think learning to speak a language is the best way to learn more about the culture of another country. Also, speaking multiple languages can give you more job opportunities in this globalized world.

00:00

11. Yourself

Does your name have a special meaning?

In general, I believe most Vietnamese names do, as does mine. My name translates to "autumn river." Autumn is connected with beauty and serenity in my country, as it is the most pleasant of the four seasons. So I suppose my parents intended me to be like the name they gave me.

Would you like to change your name in the future?

No, I wouldn't change my name for the world since I would probably need to go through a lot of paperwork and tedious red tape to acquire a new name. Plus, none of this makes sense to me. I'm not sure why individuals would change their names, but from what I've seen, there's no use unless you're a criminal and want to change your entire identity to avoid being discovered.

00:00

12. Family

How big is your family?

I live in a nuclear family, meaning that there are only four members. This type of family is commonly seen in Vietnam because the elderly generally prefer to live in their own houses.

Can you tell me something about your family members?

Yeah, sure! I have a younger brother. He has just graduated from University. Now, he’s in the process of finding a job. He’s very thoughtful and very close to me. I share with him everything in my life from work disputes to relationship problems. My mom’s the most caring woman I’ve ever known in my life. She’s also very involved in my life’s matters. My dad, on the other hand, is a man of few words. He rarely shares anything. But deep down, I know that he’s a very sweet person, but his way of expressing feelings and emotions is just a bit different, practical and subtle, I guess.

00:00

13. Food

What is your favorite food?

I’m not particularly a picky eater by any means. So, usually, I’ll be up for anything that is novel and bizarre. That said, I’d have to say that my favorite food is Salmon, I absolutely love it. Salmon is very tasty, and it’s packed with tons of nutrients. So it’s very healthy. But the thing is that this type of fish is quite expensive, so I don’t get to eat it very often.

What kinds of food are popular in your country?

Many, many, many things. But I guess when people speak about Vietnamese food. I guess “Phở” would be the most well-known food. This dish is even popular among foreigners as well. Traditionally, “Phở” is a stable breakfast, but nowadays, you can find a “Phở” place in every corner of Vietnam in any particular time of the day.

00:00

14. Weather

What’s your favorite type of weather?

I’d say that I’m more of a colder weather person. I can handle the cold pretty well, but hot weather is torturous for me, personally. Another reason is that during the cold season, you have more choice of clothes, whereas, in the summer, you have no choice but to go with light and breathable clothing.

What is the weather like in your hometown in the winter?

My hometown is in central Vietnam, so the weather is generally hot year-round. It definitely gets pretty cold in the winter though it’s not as freezing as the winter in many Northern regions. So personally speaking, I’d say that the winter in my hometown is still somewhat bearable.

00:00

15. Sports

Have you ever played any sports?

Yeah! Of course, who hasn’t? Right. Back when I was small, I used to play a lot of soccer with my friends on the weekend. We would go to a field near our house and we’d pick our team. But that was a long long time ago. Now, I have a lot on my plate, so I haven’t really got the time to take up any sports, which is a real shame.

Are there any sports you would like to try?

If I get a chance, I’ll definitely give boxing a shot. Because as per my friend’s recommendation, it’s a pretty interesting sport. Also, it’s a great way to keep fit and stay healthy as well because playing boxing burns a ton of calories, so you’re more likely to stay in a caloric deficit.

00:00

16. Art

Are you good at art?

I don't consider myself an artist. I mean, I used to take painting lessons as a youngster, but I learned later in life that I don't have a talent for this type of skill, so I stopped. Having said that, I still dabble with some lighthearted doodles here and there, most of which are heavily influenced by the comics I read in my spare time.

Do you often visit art galleries?

I'm a bit of a culture vulture, so I'm always looking for new art exhibits in my city. There are only a few because most of the galleries in Hanoi display antiquated exhibits and historical-themed artworks, which I find tedious. Like most people my age, I like looking at selected collections of modern art, and the Vincom Center for Contemporary Art, which is close to my residence, may give precisely that.

00:00

17. Clothes

Are clothes important to you?

Well, as you can probably guess when looking at me, I’m not a very fashion-conscious person, meaning that I rarely pay attention to what I wear on a daily basis. But, I’d say that for the most part, I’d like to wear smart, casual clothes. A pair of jeans and a simple T-shirt, and I’m ready to go.

What kind of clothes do you usually wear?

It depends. If it’s just a normal day, you know, I have to go to work, I usually go for a smart look. On the other hand, if it’s a day when I get to stay at home or if I hang out with my friends, I would wear comfy and casual clothes.

00:00

18. Childhood

Did you enjoy your childhood?

Yes, absolutely. My youth was filled with joy, a wonderful family of three generations, and important friends. My upbringing was enjoyable since I was free of anxieties because my fundamental requirements were supplied, and when I encountered a hurdle, there were family members ready to assist and encourage me to accomplish it. Overall, I had a great time as a kid and often smiled when I remembered it.

What is your first memory of your childhood?

My grandma holding my twin and me's hands as we headed to school is by far my most recent and vivid childhood memory. On rainy days, Mom would assist us in jumping puddles; on bright days, she was sure to bring an umbrella. She would tell us intriguing tales about children who excelled in school and went on to become great people as we walked hand in hand with smiles on our cheeks. I must say that the event made an unforgettable imprint on me.

00:00

19. Internet

How often do you go online?

Well, I utilize the Internet if I need to look up any kind of information or send an email to my coworkers or someone overseas. Additionally, if I have free time, I skim through it to locate amusing episodes of any comedy.

Do you think children should be allowed unsupervised access to the internet?

No, children shouldn't be permitted because if they are, they may visit inappropriate websites, which is bad for their mental health. They have the ability to stray from their course of study and engage in fruitless pursuits that will cost them dearly rather than bring them gain.

00:00

20. Going Out

Do you often go out in the evenings?

Yes, I typically go outside in the evening for a walk and to socialize with my neighbors.

When someone invites me, I occasionally go to birthday parties in the evening.

Do you prefer to go out on your own or with friends?

Since we have so much fun together and I can never get bored in their presence, I usually prefer to go out with my pals. I frequently go with my friends because, in addition to being a time for relaxation after a long day at work, it also allows for intimate conversation.

00:00

21. Newspaper

Do you often read the newspapers?

I haven't looked at the newspaper since getting my own phone. This might be the case because TVs and other Internet-connected devices can provide news more quickly, making it an old-fashioned method by now.

What kind of news do you usually follow?

Sport-related news, I'd say, grabs my attention the most because I love to exercise so much. I frequently watch NBA games late at night, especially when it comes to basketball.

00:00

22. Flower

Do you like flowers? (Why?)

I do enjoy flowers, yes. Being an introvert, I occasionally get feelings of calmness and relaxation while admiring lovely flowers in my garden. After it rains, I have a habit of shooting photos of flowers. I'm happiest when I spend extended periods of time by myself, in quiet surroundings, admiring the beauty of flowers as I capture them with my camera.

Are flowers important in your culture?

Definitely. Some flowers are picked to represent people's important virtues because they have lovely connotations. For instance, lotus flowers have historically served as a nation's emblem. The lotus plants emerge from the swamp, but their leaves and blooms face the sun, representing the chastity and faithfulness of human spirits.

00:00

23. Dictionaries

Do you often use a dictionary?

Yes, I do frequently use a dictionary to learn English and to determine the meaning of some unfamiliar words in my original tongue.

What do you mostly use dictionaries for?

When I read a book or some English news or articles, I frequently consult a dictionary to determine the pronunciation and meaning of unfamiliar English words. In addition, I occasionally consult a dictionary only to refresh my memory on the definitions of a few more English words. When I need to seek up a word's synonyms or antonyms or examples of how to use a word in real-world sentences, I also use a dictionary.

00:00

24. Bicycles

How often do you ride a bicycle? [Why/Why not?]

Sincerely, I hardly ever ride a bicycle these days and instead rely heavily on my car.

When I was a teenager, I loved to ride my bike everywhere, but after I moved for work, I was compelled to get a car.

What are the advantages of a bicycle compared to a car? [Why?]

Bicycles are environmentally benign and do not damage the environment the way motorized vehicles do. It is very inexpensive and does not have a large monthly maintenance expense. Additionally, cycling requires physical activity, which promotes health. Finally, unlike motor vehicles, this mode of transportation does not significantly increase traffic congestion.

00:00

25. Daily routines

What do you usually do when you get up early?

The first thing I do when I get up is to take a moment to breathe in the fresh air because my bedroom has a balcony that overlooks the garden. I went to the grocery store to buy some food and prepare breakfast after performing my personal hygiene regimen. A morning ritual for me now includes a cup of coffee before leaving for work.

Have you ever changed your routine?

I have, indeed. I used to work and study at night because I could focus better, and the stillness helps me concentrate. However, I had to work in the office that morning. I've grown accustomed to doing both work and school during the day. I was finding it tough to focus on my work for the first time. But now, It’s not what I’m comfortable doing, but it’s not too bad to keep up with it.
