Describe a special cake you received from others

You should say:

  • when it was

  • who gave it to you

  • why he or she gave it to you

and explain why this cake was special.

00:00

Answer.

For my birthday earlier this year, I received a truly special cake from my best friend. See, my friend isn't a baking extraordinaire, but she decided to put in the time and effort to bake a strawberry cake from scratch.  It wasn't the fanciest cake you'd see in a bakery window, but the love and effort that went into it made it the most precious gift I could have asked for.

There are two main reasons why this homemade cake was so special. First, it was a clear sign of how much she cared about me. She dedicated her time to baking my cake  which made me feel special. As they say “It's the thought that counts”, and the thought behind this cake was truly heartwarming.

Second, it had a sense of authenticity that a store-bought cake just couldn't match.  My best friend added her personal touches to the cake, making it feel so much more genuine. It was a gift made just for me and not something picked off a shelf.  Sharing that homemade cake with my friend was a memory I'll cherish for a long time.

Describe a special cake you had

You should say:

  • What kind of cake it was

  • When you ate it

  • Whom you ate with

And explain why you think this cake was special.

00:00

Answer.

The most special cake I've ever had was actually a classic fruit cake at my high school graduation ceremony. Right after we officially received our diplomas, my classmates and I gathered in our classroom, where  our beloved homeroom teacher, Ms. Nguyen brought out a massive cake, beautifully decorated with candied fruits and whipped cream.

What made this cake so special wasn't necessarily the taste, although it was delicious! It was the fact that it was a part of our last memories together. My senses went haywire with the sweetness of the cake, the salinity of my tears and the bitterness of our goodbyes. As we savored each bite, we knew our paths would diverge, but the memories and friendships forged over those years would forever be a sweet reminder of that special day. The cake became a symbol of this shared experience, a delicious punctuation mark at the end of our high school journey.

Vocabulary:

  • graduation (n): tốt nghiệp

  • ceremony (n): lễ

  • candied (adj): tẩm đường

  • whipped cream (n): kem tươi đánh bông

  • go haywire (idiom): mất kiểm soát

  • salinity (n): vị mặn

  • savor (v): thưởng thức

  • diverge (v): rẽ hướng

  • forge (v): xây dựng

  • symbol (n): biểu tượng

  • punctuation mark (n): dấu chấm hết

How have traditional sweets and cakes changed over time in your country?

00:00

Answer: There have definitely been some interesting changes to traditional Vietnamese sweets and cakes. Firstly, desserts used to be made with simple ingredients like rice flour, sugar, and coconut milk. Nowadays, bakers are incorporating cocoa powder, cream cheese, and even fresh fruit, which brings a whole new dimension of flavour. Secondly, there's been a shift towards smaller portion sizes. Traditionally, Vietnamese desserts were quite rich and heavy. However, with people becoming more health-conscious, there's a trend towards bite-sized treats that are still delicious but a bit lighter.

Vocabulary:

  • Ingredient (noun): Nguyên liệu

  • Incorporate (verb): Kết hợp

  • Dimension (noun): Chiều sâu

  • Shift (noun): Sự thay đổi

  • Portion (noun): Khẩu phần ăn

What role do sweets and cakes play in celebrations or special occasions?

00:00

Answer: Sweets and cakes are a big part of Vietnamese celebrations! They're a way to show hospitality and share joy with loved ones. For example, during Tết, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, every household will have a tray of bánh chưng, a square sticky rice cake filled with mung bean paste and pork. It's a traditional treat that symbolizes abundance and family togetherness. Similarly, on birthdays, there will almost always be a birthday cake, with candles lit to represent the person's age. It's a way to mark the occasion and make the birthday person feel special.

Vocabulary:

  • Hospitality (noun): Lòng hiếu khách

  • Symbolize (verb): Biểu tượng cho

  • Abundance: (noun): Sự đủ đầy

Do you think people are becoming more health-conscious and choosing healthier dessert options? Why or why not?

00:00

Answer: Definitely! I see a growing trend of people being more health-conscious, especially younger generations. They're opting for natural ingredients and less sugar in their food, desserts included. There are even cafes specializing in sugar-free treats or using alternative sweeteners like stevia.

Vocabulary:

  • health-conscious (adj): quan tâm đến sức khỏe

  • opt for (phrasal verb): lựa chọn

  • alternative (adj): thay thế

  • sweetener (n): chất tạo ngọt

What are some popular traditional sweets or cakes in your culture?

00:00

Answer: Vietnam has a wonderful variety of sweet treats! One popular option is "Bánh Chè", which is a sweet soup made with various ingredients like beans, tapioca pearls, and jellies. It's a refreshing and light dessert, perfect for a hot summer day. Another favorite is "Bánh Ít", small sticky rice cakes with a sweet bean filling, wrapped in banana leaves. They're both delicious and visually appealing!

Vocabulary:

  • variety (n): sự đa dạng

  • tapioca pearls (n): trân châu

  • refreshing (adj): mát mẻ

  • sticky rice (n): gạo nếp

  • visually appealing (adjective phrase): Bắt mắt

How do you feel about the trend of incorporating exotic flavors into desserts?

00:00

Answer: I think it's a really exciting trend! It opens up a whole new world of flavour combinations to explore. For example, Vietnamese desserts traditionally use a lot of coconut and pandan leaf, but incorporating exotic fruits like passion fruit or mango can add a whole new dimension. It also allows chefs to get creative and create fusion desserts that blend flavors from different cultures. On the other hand, I do think it's important to respect the balance of flavors in traditional desserts. Sometimes, adding too many exotic ingredients can overpower the original taste.

Vocabulary:

  • explore (v): khám phá

  • exotic (adj): nhiệt đới

  • passion fruit (n): chanh dây

  • fusion (n): kết hợp

  • overpower (v): lấn át
